When I was taking math in college I had a real problem with proofs and theorems. If you take any college calculus you’ll run into these things constantly. They are highly theoretical and because of that I had a problem understanding them.

This was my biggest weakness, I tended to have a lack of interest in topics that I could not find a real application for.

Does this sound familiar?

In my head, I would always ask? How can this be used in a practical application? It was kind of like studying the theory of making candy without ever tasting it. But once you tasted it, you’ll be a lot more excited about learning how to make it, right?

My Tip!

To make my difficult topics more interesting, I always search to find practical examples of what I’m learning can be
applied. I would start by asking the professor, “How is this theorem used in a practical application?

I would almost always get a smile and the professor would start to show how it was applied. That helped me be more motivated and excited about everything I learned.

That’s how Calculus became my favorite course in college, thanks to my desire to find out how to apply what I learned and the professors who were willing to share.

If you are interested in learning more about techniques that can help tough subjects be easier to learn and to even excel in then please try this book that has been helpful to me:

You could read it over the weekend and be ready to take on the world on Monday.

I get this question a lot, and the answer is yes I have. I purchased it from Clickbank and it seems to have helped me. It’s a 200+ pages of reading but well worth the time considering the techniques you’ll learn will save you so much more time in the future in your studies.

10 Strategies for Adults and College Students That Will Help You Learn Faster

1. Stay engaged in the subject you are learning. People become bored when they already understand the material being brought before them (meaning they have learned it before from another teacher). If the teacher isn’t providing you with material that is more challenging, talk to them about it and ask for any necessary additional materials you might need to make the course you are taking more rewarding and challenging.

2. Learn on your own. There are many things teachers won’t be able to teach you because college semesters typically only last about 15 or 16 weeks — you cannot possibly learn everything there is about a subject in that short amount of time. Try to challenge yourself if you can. If a certain topic wasn’t covered in your class, don’t wait for your teacher to teach you. Lectures are also more effective if you have already introduced yourself to the concepts that are being taught in class.

3. Try a study group. If you’re having trouble understanding a concept, sometimes studying with a group of people from your class can be helpful.

4. Use what you’ve learned to teach someone else. You can learn a subject better if you’re teaching it to someone else because it is forcing you to learn the concepts being taught, and you’ll improve your self-esteem and motivation as well.

5. Write about your subject. Creating a Wiki or some frequently asked questions can help you realize what you already know and what you don’t. Those things you still don’t understand you can go over again simply by writing about them.

6. Learn by doing. Try to learn the basics first before you jump right into the hard stuff.

7. Test what you have learned on yourself. Use flash cards to help you reinforce what you have learned in the classroom.

8. Set some goals and plans you hope to accomplish in your pursuit for knowledge. It’s much easier when you have a plan of how you’re going to achieve your goals by setting a timeframe for when you want to complete your quest, making sure you include your regular everyday life in that plan.

9. Don’t give up — keep plugging away no matter how intimidating or challenging the subject might be. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so take your time.

10. Relax before your exam — one of the worst things you can do to prepare for a test is cram in all the information the night before it. If you’ve studied, review what you have learned and then take a break.
